Northwest Organization of Nurse Leaders - Event Information
Event Name:
A Coach Model of Precepting for New Graduate Nurses
Event Type(s):
CE Available
Description:
Overview
New graduate Nurses (NGNs) in the COVID-era are graduating from nursing school, passing their NCLEX exam and starting new positions with little clinical experience. Incumbent RN preceptors (RNPs) are heavily burdened with a large influx of new nurses that are being onboarded into the organization. A coach model of precepting was implemented to relieve burden for RNPs and help NGNs start learning nursing fundamentals in a safe and slow-paced environment. One coach is paired with two to four NGNs for the first four to six weeks of their orientation. At the end of the coaching period, coaches provide a preceptor handoff for NGNs to enter the traditional 1:1 precepting experience.
Objectives:
1. Facilitate NGNs learning of nursing fundamentals in a safe and slow-paced environment without the stress of a patient assignment.
2. Decrease perceived burden of RNPs already faced with onboarding a large influx of new and travel nurses into the organization.
